Beach safety: understanding tides and currents before you swim

Most trouble at the beach doesn't come from giant waves. It comes from a tide that rises while nobody is watching, and from currents you can't see from your towel. The good news: almost all of it is avoidable with ten minutes of planning. This guide covers the essentials of beach safety — tides and currents — calmly and without scaremongering, so the sea works with you, not against you.
Coves and sandbars: borrowed ground
Low tide uncovers hidden coves, caves, passages between rocks and tongues of sand that beg to be explored. Treat them as borrowed ground: the sea takes them back every cycle, and the semidiurnal cycle runs about 12 hours and 25 minutes. From one low tide to the next high, you have little more than six hours.
The detail that catches people out is that the water doesn't rise at a steady pace: in the middle hours of the cycle the level changes far faster than it does just after low tide. The passage you crossed with water at your ankles can be swimming-deep sooner than you'd guess.
- Before crossing to a cove, check the time of low tide and plan your return with a generous margin.
- Identify your way out before you go in — not once the water is already rising.
- If the passage is getting wet on your way in, don't cross: it will be worse on the way back.
Rip currents: how to spot one
The water that waves push onto the beach has to return to sea, and it often does so through a narrow channel: a rip current. From the sand it usually gives itself away as a strip of darker, deceptively calm water between two areas of breaking surf, sometimes with foam or stirred-up sand drifting seaward. That "corridor without waves" that looks like the perfect spot for a swim is exactly the one to avoid.
If one catches you, remember: a rip doesn't pull you under, it carries you away from the beach. The real danger is exhausting yourself swimming against it.
The one rule worth memorising: never swim against a rip. Swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the channel, then come back in at an angle. If you can't, float, save your energy and raise an arm for help. And on land, never turn your back to the sea.
Spring tides: when everything happens faster
The tidal coefficient (a 0–120 scale from the Spanish IHM) sums up how much water is on the move that day: below 40 are neap tides, 40–79 are average, and from 80 up you're in spring tides. Springs arrive 1–2 days after new or full moon — the so-called "age of the tide".
On a high-coefficient day, far more water moves in the same six hours: the level rises visibly faster, currents accelerate through inlets, estuaries and river mouths, and coves close off earlier than you expect. That doesn't mean staying home; it means more margin, more attention, and — if in doubt — choosing an open, lifeguarded beach.
Planning a beach day around the tide
A good beach day is decided the evening before, with the tide table in front of you:
- Easy swimming: low tide and the start of the flood usually leave more sand and a gentler shoreline. Pick a lifeguarded beach and stay inside the flagged bathing zone.
- Coves, rock pools and caves: only on a falling tide or at low water, with your departure time decided in advance.
- Walks across the intertidal zone or shellfish gathering: same rule — go in on the ebb and leave before the water starts rising in earnest.
- Flags: green, yellow or red override any plan. Red means no swimming, no exceptions.
Official sources, always
A tide table predicts the astronomical water level, but it can't see groundswell or wind. Before a day on the coast, check the official coastal warnings — AEMET in Spain, IPMA in Portugal — respect the flags and the lifeguards' instructions, and be wary of any day with a coastal-hazard warning, however sunny it looks. That's the safety layer no app replaces.
