Because the app registers a file association for those types, you can open them straight from Finder on Mac or the Files app on iPhone, and you can also create and edit new documents inside the app. Markdown is plain text, so your files stay readable in any other editor.

You write your Markdown and see the rendered result alongside the editor as you type, so there is no separate "render" step. MD Reader also builds a navigable table of contents from your headings, letting you jump to any section in a single tap. A VS Code-style command palette and native keyboard shortcuts on Mac make moving around even faster.

Yes. Mathematical expressions are rendered with KaTeX, both inline using $...$ and as display blocks using $$...$$. Equations appear in the preview as you type, so technical notes, lecture material, and scientific documents look exactly as intended on both Mac and iPhone.

Code blocks are highlighted by syntax for Swift, Python, JavaScript, and many more languages. Just tag a fenced code block with its language and MD Reader colors it for easy reading. Beyond code, the app also formats tables, task lists, quotes, and horizontal rules so technical guides read cleanly.

The AI assistant is powered by Apple Intelligence (Apple's on-device Foundation Models). You give it a prompt and it generates ready-to-use Markdown, always writing math in LaTeX so it renders instantly with KaTeX. Crucially, it runs entirely on your device: your text is not sent to any server, there are no API keys, and no account is required.

The AI panel needs a device that supports Apple Intelligence (macOS 26 / iOS 26). On devices that do not support it, the rest of MD Reader works exactly as expected, and the AI panel is simply unavailable, so you can still read, edit, preview, and render math and code without it.
